Parshas Va'eira (Pesach 5764 2b):

The Essence of the Seder

Maror, Matzah, and Pesach

Picture

Rabban Gamliel famously teaches: Whoever does not explain these three things on Pesach has not fulfilled his obligation: Pesach, Matzah, and Maror.

These three are not just symbolic, but essential lenses into the meaning of Yetziat Mitzrayim and the identity of the Jewish people.

But if we want to understand them as an experiential narrative, we must explore them not in the order of the Haggadah, but in their chronological sequence: Maror, Matzah, and Pesach.

Maror – Bitterness, Assimilation, and the Birth of Purpose

Maror reminds us of the bitterness of slavery.

But beneath that bitterness is a deeper truth. The Jews in Egypt had begun to assimilate. They forgot the unique spiritual legacy of the Avot. They looked and acted like Egyptians. And the more they tried to blend in, the more the Egyptians reacted with suspicion and hostility. "They are trying to take over," they said — much as was said in Nazi Germany.

But paradoxically, the oppression that followed was not just punishment — it was a form of Divine mercy. Suffering reminded the people they had a higher purpose.

Chazal teach: When we abandon the will of Hashem, suffering wakes us up to the danger. Like a finger in fire, pain is the signal that saves the limb. So too, Maror is bitter — but its bitterness gives birth to freedom, because it calls us back to ourselves.

Pesach – The Offering that Formed a Nation

The korban Pesach is not merely a sacrifice — it is Avodah, a profound act of Divine service that catalyzed Jewish nationhood.
  1. Avodah Stam – The Jews in Egypt had adopted idol worship. They had lost their identity.
  2. The korban Pesach marked a radical shift: We are not serving false powers outside of us. We serve Hashem — and only Hashem. Why do people worship idols? Because they want to manipulate something external to gain power or comfort. But to declare Hashem Echad is to say: My life is not mine — it is Yours. My work is Your work. I exist to serve You. This is freedom, not slavery — the freedom to have purpose.
  3. Avodah of Achdus – The korban Pesach had to be eaten in one house, by people who signed up together. It had to be whole, unbroken, roasted — not diluted or boiled.
It had to be a one-year-old lamb or goat, small and tender creatures that shakes when it feels pain in any limb.
  4. This offering unified the people — not in tolerance, but in shared purpose. Tolerance says: I don’t care what you do. Unity says: We’re doing this together.
  5. Avodah of Mesirus Nefesh – The Egyptians worshipped the lamb. To slaughter it and paint its blood on the doorway was an act of bravery and spiritual defiance.
  6. Did Hashem need the sign? Of course not. But the blood was placed inside the doorposts, to keep the Jews conscious of what they had done — and of Who was watching over them — the entire night.
  7. As the Brisker Rav once said in Nazi Germany, there is a time when the only thing we can hold onto is Ain Od Milvado — there is none besides Him.

Matzah – The Bread of Simplicity and Truth

The contrast of Matzah vs. Chometz is the battle of the soul.

The sages teach that chometz represents the yetzer hara, the ego, the illusion of grandeur. What is chometz? Bread that has risen, not because of substance, but because it has acted on itself, puffed itself up with air. It is full — but empty.

This illusion began with Adam’s sin — choosing self over truth.

Matzah is the opposite. It is the bread of affliction — yes — but also the bread of freedom. Why? Because the poor man is not deluded by fantasies of control. He eats simply, and knows Who his Provider is.

Matzah is truth — it is what it is. And so it becomes the symbol of redemptive humility.

The Four Cups – Four Stages of Geulah

We now turn to the four cups of wine, and their root in the beginning of Parshas Va’eira (Shemot 6:6–7):

I will take you out from under the burdens of Egypt; I will rescue you from their service; I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments; I will take you to Me as a people.

According to the Maharal, these represent four stages of redemption, which correspond to three stages of exile:
  1. Gehirus – Simply living in a foreign culture, being defined by it. Even when treated well, the Jewish self is subjugated.
  2. Avodah – Being forced to labor. You do not own your work or choose your path.
  3. Inui – Actual suffering. Physical pain and degradation.

The redemption comes in reverse order:
  • "I will take you out" – From the burdens of suffering.
  • "I will rescue you" – From enslavement and forced labor.
  • "I will redeem you" – With miracles that break the laws of nature.
  • "I will take you" – Into a relationship. Covenant. Purpose. Nationhood.
This fourth level is not just freedom from, but freedom for — the formation of a people who live for something beyond themselves.

The Fifth Cup – The Ultimate Redemption

We pour a fifth cup for Eliyahu Hanavi, but we do not drink it.

Why? Because this final promise — "And I will bring you into the Land" — has not yet been fulfilled completely. It awaits the final redemption, when the world itself will be transformed.

In Summary
  • Maror is the bitterness that reminds us who we are.
  • Matzah is the simplicity that clears the illusions of self.
  • Pesach is the courageous leap of identity into covenant and unity.
  • And the four cups walk us step by step through the journey from exile to nationhood.

The story of Yetziat Mitzrayim is not a tale of the past — it is our personal and national origin story, retold every year so that we may relive it, and carry it forward.

Because we were not just freed from Egypt — we were freed for Hashem.

"And you shall say: It is the Pesach offering to Hashem, Who passed over the houses of the Children of Israel in Egypt."
